Low attention span?
Big-big social-media companies, let it be YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or Roposo, have introduced a new problem. The problem is often less talked about or overlooked.
The problem is Low Attention Span.
Internet and social media, in general, are day by day reducing our attention span. For example, earlier, people used to read books, which took them a few days, then came movies, which took a few hours, and then came YouTube, which took a few minutes. As you can see, the tendency to read or watch content is reducing exponentially, thus reducing the attention span.
Short-video sharing platforms make attention spans to the 'minutest' level possible. It won't be surprising if we compare this to a gambling machine. They only take a few seconds. You must've noticed that whenever we scroll down through the reels section, we tend to scroll it down and down in the search for better content with minimal effort. Every 15 seconds, we want something new and refreshing. According to sources, humans now have an attention span less than that of a goldfish.
Now you would ask me, Mayukh, what problems arise from low attention span?
Well, there are many!!
Firstly, we don't retain much from what we read or watch. Then, the most significant problem is equally dealt with by all of us. We lose the ability to focus on anything for too long. This is day-to-day trouble that every child faces. This hampers study and your productivity, leading to bad grades :(
Lastly, we don't get any long-term gratification or fulfillment. Rather aftermath, we regret that the time we whiled away could have been used in fruitful work. This also leads to depression among teens.
But when there's a will, there's a way.
Some helpful tips to avoid this vicious trap:
Find a Companion: Rather than keeping a phone with you, you can adopt a book that you can finish within one sitting. My suggestions: Rework, Show your work and Alchemist( a perennially best selling book). This is will make you crave more books as they will get over soon. You may subsequently shift to bigger ones in time.
If not able to concentrate on books, try audiobooks: A PRO-TIP :)
I use audiobooks instead of reading books physically. They add on surplus benefits than those to books. You learn about various issues in no time, simultaneously hearing the tone and voice of the author, which also enhances one's vocal and listening skills.
Open your social media apps on laptop: Using social media apps on a laptop is way more effective than on phones as they don't have that scroll-down feature for the reels section. Consider this as a 'bramhastra'
I hope this helps you in some or the other way, do let me know below.
Till then, that's your Bhai Mayukh, signing off!!
